Baylor Bears at No. 19 Oklahoma Sooners
This Big 12 opener between Baylor and Oklahoma doesn’t look very interesting when you look at the history of this series (more on that later), but it got a little more so with the news Friday that Heisman winner Sam Bradford will play for the first time since dislocating his shoulder in the season opener.
The Sooners are 28-point betting favorites on WagerWeb.com.
This move is a no-brainer in a sense. The Sooners can’t win a national title this year and probably won’t get an at-large bid to a BCS bowl, but they can still win the Big 12 and get one of the big-money bowls that way. So getting Bradford in a likely rout of Baylor is the wise decision with the Red River Rivalry with Texas on tap next weekend – OU is going for an unprecedented fourth straight Big 12 title. The winner of next week’s game should win the Big 12 South with fellow challenger Oklahoma State losing players left and right.
“Sam has had a great week of practice and is ready to play,” said Oklahoma head coach Bob Stoops on Friday. “We’re obviously excited to have him back.”
Despite his return, Bradford indicated this week that surgery remains a possibility.
The Sooners have outscored the opposition 109-0 in their two wins and have been outscored by 2 points in their two losses – to BYU and Miami. It would appear Baylor would fall into the former category.
The Bears, of course, lost their star QB, Robert Griffin, to a season-ending injury a few games ago. They are 3-1, but two of those wins are against non-BCS foes. But boy are the Bears due in this rivalry. This is the 19th meeting between Baylor and Oklahoma, and the Sooners have never lost. In fact, their margin of victory has been less than 10 points only three times. Overall, OU has won 24 games in a row at home.
Oklahoma is the only Big 12 team Baylor has never defeated. In fact, OU is the only team Baylor has played at least five times without at least one win. Baylor has lost 18 consecutive games against Top 25 foes
