Arkansas Razorbacks at No. 1 Florida Gators

The passed what looks like their toughest test of the regular season last week at LSU, but UF better not overlook Arkansas on Saturday as the Hogs possess arguably the most potent offense in the SEC.

Oddsmakers at WagerWeb.com seem to be convinced the Gators won’t lose focus, as they are 24.5-point betting favorites.

It’s a little tough to know how good Arkansas is. They have scored at least 41 points in every game but one – but in that one the Hogs were shut down by Alabama in a 35-7 loss. The Florida defense is as good as the Tide’s is. In fact, Florida ranks No. 1 in the nation in total defense (202.6 yards per game), scoring defense (6.4 points) and pass-efficiency defense. The Gators are No. 2 in fewest first downs allowed and No. 5 in third-down defense.

Razorbacks QB Ryan Mallett leads the SEC in passing (284.4 ypg) and is second in passing efficiency behind Florida’s Tim Tebow. Razorbacks WRs Greg Childs and Joe Adams are among the top three in receiving yards per game in the conference. But that’s not to say the Hogs don’t run the ball. In fact, they have one of the SEC’s best running backs in Michael Smith, who had 145 yards last week in upset of Auburn.

However, Smith’s playing status remains in doubt for Saturday’s game. Coach Bobby Petrino said late this week that Smith would be a “game-time decision” after he tweaked his right hamstring against Auburn.

The problem for Arkansas is defense: It ranks last in the SEC in total defense (398.6 ypg) and pass defense (253.4 ypg). The Gators are one of the top-scoring teams in the nation and one of the best on the ground as well. But this might be a week Tebow throws more. Florida ranks sixth nationally in total offense, averaging 486.4 yards per game, and is seventh in scoring (39.0 points per game). The Gators will be the fourth consecutive Arkansas opponent that ranked in the top 10 offensively when playing the Hogs.

The Gators have won seven straight in this series.
