Wednesday college basketball odds: No. 18 Minnesota at No. 12 Michigan State

Michigan looks to stay a game behind Big Ten leader Indiana as the Spartans look for payback against Minnesota on Wednesday. Sparty opened as a 2.5-point favorite on Check our current odds.

MSU bounced back from a loss to those Hoosiers with an 80-75 win over Illinois last Wednesday. Star guard Keith Appling led a pivotal run early in the second half and finished with 24 points, eight rebounds and seven assists to help the short-handed Spartans win. Michigan State (18-4, 7-2 Big Ten) started the game without senior center Derrick Nix, finished it without sophomore guard Travis Trice and played much of the second half without freshman guard Gary Harris. Appling leads the Spartans in scoring (14.0 ppg – 11th Big Ten) and assists (4.2 apg – 5th Big Ten), having led MSU in scoring in 12 games, and scoring 20 or more points four times, all coming in Spartan wins.

Trice, a key guard off the bench, was limited to 11 minutes in the first half because of a blow he took to the head on a shot attempt. Trice missed five games after breaking his nose and getting a concussion in the season-opening loss to Connecticut. Harris, a starter, went to the locker room midway through the second half with back spasms and returned to the bench, but not the game. Trice hasn’t been cleared yet but Harris hopes to play. He said he wouldn’t have played if the Spartans had played over the weekend. If neither Harris nor Trice plays against the Gophers, coach Tom Izzo will have to replace 17 points and four assists a game. Izzo said he expects Denzel Valentine to assume an increased role Wednesday. Russell Byrd might play more, too. Both wing players got more reps in practice with the starters.

Minnesota beat Iowa 62-59 on Sunday for its second straight win. Austin Hollins hit the go-ahead 3-pointer with 11.6 seconds left. Minnesota (17-5, 5-4) scored the last seven points of the game, and Iowa turned the ball over on the last two possessions before Mike Gesell’s tying attempt rolled off the front rim at the buzzer.

Michigan State leads the all-time series with Minnesota, 63-58, including a 39-19 advantage in games played in East Lansing. The Spartans have won 12 of the last 14, 17 of the last 20, and 22 of the last 27 meetings. MSU has won the last 13 meetings at Breslin Center. Tom Izzo has a 25-9 all-time record against the Golden Gophers. MSU lost 76-63 at Minnesota on Dec. 31. Appling had 15 points and five assists, but Andre Hollins had 22 points to lift Minnesota. trends: Under is 7-1 in the last 8 meetings in Michigan St. Under is 9-2 in the last 11 meetings.
