Tuesday college basketball odds: Ohio State at Purdue

Off a disappointing effort over the weekend at Illinois, No. 15 Ohio State looks to bounce back Tuesday night at Purdue, with the Buckeyes opening as 6.5-point favorite on WagerWeb.com. Check our current lines.

OSU (11-3, 1-1) lost 74-55 at the Illini. Illinois started fast and led 37-25 at halftime. They used a 13-2 run early in the second half to build a 50-27 lead. Illinois’ stingy defense shut down the Buckeyes, who shot just 33 percent from the field and turned the ball over 16 times. Deshaun Thomas led Ohio State with 24 points, but beyond him the Buckeyes had no one to turn to for offense. Aaron Craft had a quiet 11 points and Lenzelle Smith Jr. finished with eight, all in the first half.

“They played good defense and we could never get that one bucket to kind of free us up a little bit, free our minds a little bit,” OSU coach Thad Matta said.

Purdue (7-7, 1-1) was blown out 84-61 at Michigan State on Saturday after upsetting the Illini in the Boilers’ Big Ten opener. The Spartans used a 28-7 run in the second half to pull away. The Spartans missed their first 10 shots from the field after halftime, but it didn’t much matter in what quickly became a free throw-shooting contest. Michigan State finished 18 of 22 from the line, and the Boilermakers were 9 of 20 — including 6 of 16 in the second half. A.J. Hammons scored 20 points for Purdue. Purdue shot 39 percent from the field.

In its last four games, Purdue has been guilty of an average of just 9.3 turnovers per game; the Boilers own a +3.8 turnover margin and a 1.5 assist-to-turnover ratio in those games, with freshman Ronnie Johnson averaging 4.0 assists per game with a 2.0 ATR in that span.

Purdue is 105-18 (.854) overall and 48-14 (.774) in Big Ten play at Mackey Arena under head coach Matt Painter; the Boilers’ last meeting with Ohio State on Keady Court resulted in a 13-point win over a second-ranked OSU squad on the strength of a career-high 38 points from E’Twaun Moore.
