Michigan State looks to keep its perfect home record intact and keep pace with the Big Ten leaders when the Spartans hosts formerly ranked Illinois on Thursday. The Spartans opened as 9-point favorites on WagerWeb.com. Check our current lines.
MSU looks to bounce back from a 75-70 loss at Indiana on Sunday. Freshman guard Gary Harris, last year’s Indiana Mr. Basketball was booed relentlessly, yet made five 3-pointers and finished with 21 points. Adreian Payne added 18 points and was 3 of 4 from beyond the arc, matching his season total of three 3s. The only other player to reach double figures was Branden Dawson, another Indiana native, who has 12 points and eight rebounds. The Spartans, playing in special green-and-gold uniforms, committed 19 turnovers, allowed Indiana to shoot 50.9 percent from the field and essentially wound up with a rebounding draw, 32-31.
Illinois has plummeted from the Top 25. The Illini lost 74-60 to new No. 1 Michigan on Sunday. Brandon Paul led Illinois with 15 points but had five of the Illini’s 15 costly turnovers. Illinois (15-6, 2-5) has been doomed by cold shooting since mid-December and shot 37.1 percent Sunday.
Illinois is aiming for its fourth win this season over a team in the current Top 25. The Illini are one of seven teams who have defeated a total of three opponents featured in this week’s AP poll — tied for the most nationally along with Michigan, Duke, Syracuse, Arizona, Butler and Indiana State. Illinois and Butler, meanwhile, are the nation’s only teams with two wins over teams in the current AP Top 10. Michigan State is the sixth ranked opponent that Illinois is facing this season. The Illini are 2-3 against ranked teams, with victories over then-No. 10 Gonzaga and then-No. 8 Ohio State. Illinois won its most recent road game against a ranked opponent, defeating No. 10 Gonzaga, 85-74, on Dec. 8. Illinois’ last road win over a ranked Big Ten opponent came on Feb. 9, 2010, a 63-56 win at No. 11 Wisconsin.
MSU has won five straight against Illinois in East Lansing but lost 42-41 last year in Champaign.
