At No. 8 in the Associated Press poll, Miami is tied for its highest ranking ever. UM enters off a 72-50 blowout of Boston College. Rion Brown, a reserve, tied a career high with 22 points, and No. 8 Miami remained unbeaten in the Atlantic Coast Conference. The Hurricanes (18-3, 9-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) have won 10 consecutive games and are 10-0 in their on-campus arena, winning each of the past three home games by at least 22 points. They are the last unbeaten team in league play among the major conferences.
Kenny Kadji scored 10 points during a span of four possessions to start a second-half surge for Miami. He finished with 16 points and eight rebounds in 21 minutes for the Hurricanes, who went 11 of 22 from 3-point range. They held an ACC opponent to 50 points or less for the fourth time.
North Carolina crushed Wake Forest 87-62 last time out. Reggie Bullock scored 23 points and James Michael McAdoo added 20 points for the Tar Heels (16-6, 6-3 ACC), who have won six of seven since an 0-2 league start. North Carolina put together a 24-5 run spanning halftime to blow the game open and take a 25-point lead on the way to an easy home win. The Tar Heels shot 52 percent and scored 26 points off turnovers to beat Wake Forest for the fourth straight time. North Carolina led by 20 points at halftime and by 34 points after the break.
Miami beat North Carolina 68-59 on Jan. 10 in Chapel Hill. UM led for most of the second half, shot 47 percent on 25-of-53 shooting and held the Tar Heels to one field goal during a critical seven-minute span late. Miami is 3-18 against North Carolina in the all-time series, which dates back to the 1949-50 season. The Canes’ three wins came in a 64-61 overtime victory on Jan. 4, 2003, an 81-70 victory on Jan. 14, 2006 and the one early this season.
