The Buckeyes beat then-No. 2 Michigan 56-53 in Columbus on Sunday, making the Wolverines the last team in the nation to lose a game. Deshaun Thomas led the Buckeyes (13-3, 3-1) with 20 points. OSU harassed Michigan star Trey Burke with lockdown defense from Aaron Craft that forced Michigan’s leading scorer to take 14 shots to get his 15 points while turning the ball over four times.

The Buckeyes had been at their best against their worst opponents, and vice versa. They came into the game 12-0 vs. unranked teams and 0-3 against those in the Top 25. But after what even the players called an up-and-down season, they came up especially big against their most heated opponent.

Michigan State won 81-72 at Penn State on Wednesday. Spartans guard Branden Dawson and center Adreian Payne each sat out the first half of the game because of a scuffle the two players were involved in earlier in the day at the Nittany Lion Inn. Payne entered the game with about 16:30 left in the second half and finished with 20 points in the Spartans’ win. Dawson had five points in 14 minutes. Coach Tom Izzo said Dawson and Payne wouldn’t be charged for the altercation that began over what Dawson said were comments he made to assistant coaches about leaving practice gear in his room. Police were called after a wall was dented at the hotel. The players were expected to pay for the damage.
