Tonight’s Sunshine State battle between Miami and Florida State could find the loser not getting an at-large bid.

The Seminoles are 2-point favorites on WagerWeb.com.

The Hurricanes definitely need this game more. They are 4-7 in the ACC and have lost two straight games. In fact, Miami’s past five losses have all been winnable, with UM losing each by five points or less. Three of those losses came in overtime.

“We’re so close,” Coach Frank Haith said. “I really believe at some point in time this season this team is going to take off because of that.”

However, the Canes likely will be without starting forward Dwayne Collins tonight. The team’s leading rebounder and second-leading scorer continues to be hampered by the left ankle sprain he sustained last week, which kept him out of Sunday’s loss against North Carolina.

“I think it’s going to be Saturday [against Boston College] before we get him back,” Haith said. “But it’s a game-time decision.”

FSU is tied with three others for third place in the ACC standings while the Hurricanes, losers in five of their past six games, dropped into 10th place. FSU is tied with three others for third place in the ACC standings while the Hurricanes, losers in five of their past six games, dropped into 10th place.

The Hurricanes were victorious in the last meeting between the programs, 75-69 in Coral Gables on Jan. 21 behind 28 points from senior Jack McClinton. A sweep might give UM the edge over FSU in the eyes of the NCAA selection committee.

Miami’s strength of schedule is ranked 11th in the country. The Hurricanes have played five games versus teams that have been ranked No. 1 this season and have played four of the five teams that have been atop the polls in 2008-09 — UConn, North Carolina, Wake Forest and Duke. Pitt is the only team that has reached the top spot this season that Miami is not scheduled to face.

McClinton has scored 30-plus points in three straight games and is averaging 33.7 points, 3.0 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 1.0 steals per game over that span. He averages an ACC-best 24.1 points per game versus conference opponents, while he is third in the league in scoring versus all opponents.

FSU guard Toney Douglas has scored 20 points or more in 16 games, tops in the ACC.

The Hurricanes are 4-0 this season in games played on Wednesday — defeating Wake Forest, Florida State, Maryland and North Florida.
