Monday college basketball odds: No. 13 UCLA vs. Georgetown
Top recruit Shabazz Muhammad will make his collegiate debut on Monday night as No. 13 UCLA faces Georgetown in the Legends Classic at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn. UCLA is a 7-point favorite on WagerWeb.com.
The NCAA on Friday reinstated the 6-foot-6 Muhammad after hearing an appeal from the Bruins. Muhammad’s family will have to repay approximately $1,600 in impermissible benefits he was deemed to have accepted, and the three games he has already missed will serve as his suspension.
Muhammad will join fellow freshmen Jordan Adams, Kyle Anderson and Tony Parker to complete the class that has been pegged as the impetus for UCLA’s re-ascension into the national scene. Muhammad is the key reason UCLA has been projected to return to prominence. He’s an athletic, left-handed wing who can score from anywhere on the court and the type of clutch-time alpha dog who can carry a team through a tough stretch.
The Bruins improved to 3-0 last Thursday evening, securing an 100-70 win over James Madison (0-1). Sophomore guard Norman Powell led UCLA with 27 points, and Adams registered 25 points. Adams has become UCLA’s first freshman to open his rookie season by scoring at least 20 points in each of the Bruins’ first three games.
UCLA will play in New York City for the third consecutive season and for the fourth time in the last five seasons. The Bruins dropped a 66-63 decision to St. John’s (at Madison Square Garden) on Feb. 18, 2012.
UCLA has won both previous meetings against Georgetown, securing a 71-70 decision in Washington D.C. on Feb. 8, 2003, after having defeated the Hoyas, 98-91, in Pauley Pavilion on Dec. 29, 2001 … in the Feb. 8 2003 meeting, Cedric Bozeman made two free throws with 4.9 seconds to play, snapping UCLA’s nine-game losing streak … Bozeman had entered that game as a 48 percent free throw shooter … when the two schools faced on Dec. 29, 2001, Georgetown reduced UCLA’s 22-point lead in the game’s final minutes before the Bruins were able to secure the 98-91 win at home, pushing their record to 9-2.
