Ole Miss loses another guard
The strength of the Mississippi team this year was likely its glut of guards, but despite the Rebels starting the basketball season 2-0 it could be a long season after a pair of injuries in the backcourt.
Junior guard Eniel Polynice is out for the season after knee surgery revealed more damage than originally anticipated. Doctors reportedly found damage to both knee cartilage and to the bone. Polynice had surgery on the same knee after last season and missed several weeks.
The procedure was a follow-up to an initial injury at the end of last season, when he missed the Rebels’ first-round NIT game against UC Santa Barbara.
“Unfortunately for him, and for us, the rehab process doesn’t look like it will allow him to be back this season,” Ole Miss coach Andy Kennedy said. “Obviously, we’re disappointed, but we’ve got to regroup.”
The 6-foot-5 Polynice averaged 10.9 points and 5.3 rebounds per game last season, and was viewed as the Rebels’ best defender. The Rebs will seek a medical redshirt for Polynice.

“Anytime a team loses its most experienced player, there will obviously be adjustments that have to be made,” said Kennedy.
This news comes less than two weeks after losing another guard, sophomore Trevor Gaskins (an SEC All-Freshman pick last year), for the season because of an ACL tear in his knee. He started eight games last season and played in all 35, averaging 5.9 points.

Before the season, Blue Ribbon Yearbook said the Ole Miss backcourt might be the best in the SEC this season. Ole Miss has five guards remaining who are on scholarship — Chris Warren, Zach Graham, Terrico White, Will Bogan and David Huertas.
Graham stepped in for Polynice and contributed a career-high 16 points in Ole Miss’ 89-71 win over South Alabama on Tuesday night. He will get first crack at Polynice’s job.
