Wednesday NBA: Pistons (21-11) at Blazers (20-14)

7 January 2009 160 views No Comment

The Detroit Pistons could be at a major injury disadvantage for Wednesday night’s game in Portland, as shooting guard Richard Hamilton is likely to sit out and power forward Rasheed Wallace is very questionable.

As of this writing, there is no line on the WagerWeb.com board for this game until the status of Hamilton and Wallace is made official.

Hamilton (17.2 pgg) has missed five games in a row with a slight tear in his left groin (ouch!) suffered the day after Christmas. He did some light shooting at the team’s practice Tuesday, but Pistons coach Michael Curry thought it was unlikely that Hamilton would be able to go.

Wallace has missed missed the last two games with a sore right foot but was able to participate in drills Tuesday.

Despite those key injuries, Detroit has won seven games in a row thanks to a deep bench (shoot, even Kwame Brown is contributing!) and sudden star Rodney Stuckey. He was named Eastern Conference player of the week after averaging 23 points, 5.3 assists and 4.5 rebounds during that 4-0 stretch last week for Detroit.

Detroit is 10-3 since Stuckey became a full-time starter, and the Pistons have outscored each of their past 13 opponents in the first quarter. In those games, Detroit has averaged 25.5 points and limited opponents to 19.4. Before joining the starting lineup, the Pistons averaged 21.1 points in the first quarter while opponents scored 22 per game.

The Pistons are among the NBA’s best defensive teams, ranking seventh in points allowed (93.8 per game), fourth in opponents’ 3-point shooting (33.1 percent), ninth in opponents’ field goal shooting (44.2 percent) and ninth in blocks (5.4 per game). And they average the second-fewest turnovers (12.7) in the league – one spot ahead of the Blazers (12.9).

Portland will be without its best player tonight as All-Star guard Brandon Roy has missed three straight games with a hamstring issue and is expected out another week. Roy is Portland’s leading scorer at 23.0 points per game. The Blazers upset Boston in their first game without Roy but have struggled from the field in losses to the Hornets and Lakers since then.

Portland won the first meeting between the teams this season, 96-85 in Detroit in November. And the Blazers are 31-17 all-time vs. Detroit in Portland.
