Iverson out at least 2 more weeks, and that’s good for Pistons
Ever since Allen Iverson went to the bench with a sore back, which seemed to pop up right when Iverson was told he would no longer be a starter, the Detroit Pistons have been the NBA’s most impressive time.
Sans A.I., Detroit has beaten Orlando, Boston and Denver, three teams with NBA title hopes. So the news that Iverson will miss at least another two weeks with his back issue probably isn’t much of a worry in Motown – Detroit is six games under .500 with him in the starting lineup. Iverson was evaluated Wednesday at Georgetown after an initial MRI last week revealed no structural damage. He won’t travel with the team to prevent stress on his back and will be reevaluated by Georgetown doctors after two weeks.
Iverson, who is averaging 18 points per game, has not played since leaving the floor after 8 minutes in the Pistons’ Feb. 25 loss at New Orleans. Rip Hamilton has averaged 25.7 points in the three victories since replacing Iverson in the starting lineup.
The two-week timetable has Iverson missing another eight games with a possible return for a home game against the Los Angeles Clippers on March 20. With Iverson out, Rodney Stuckey and Will Bynum have received increased playing time.
However, Iverson said he is expecting to beat that timetable.
“He doesn’t think that he’s going to have to be out the entire two weeks,” coach Michael Curry said. “He wants to get out there as soon as possible. So, hopefully with the treatment and the rest, he’ll feel better and we can get him out there as soon as possible. We need him out there. We need him healthy, out there healthy playing so we can be the team we envision ourselves being.”
