Wednesday NBA: Pistons (24-19) at Timberwolves (16-27)
Oddsmakers clearly can’t believe their eyes, as the Detroit Pistons are 1-point WagerWeb.com favorites to win at Minnesota on Wednesday night.
You probably are thinking, these are the Pistons … these are the Timberwolves. But the script has been flipped, so to speak. Detroit has dropped three games in a row, while Minnesota has been the best team in the NBA this month – you read that right – in going 10-2.
The last time Minnesota played the Pistons was in November, when the Timberwolves won by 26 points. But the following week the Timberwolves began what turned out to be a 13-game losing streak during which Kevin McHale replaced Randy Wittman as coach.
“After that game, I knew we could do it,” said Minnesota star Al Jefferson. “I was just surprised, really surprised that it didn’t happen sooner. We beat a team like Detroit like that on their home floor and then we come back and play like we never played this game before in our life.”
Much of the Timberwolves’ success revolves around Jefferson, averaging 22.6 points and 10.6 rebounds.

After a 108-105 home loss to Houston on Sunday, the Pistons are 2-7 in their past nine games, and 20-19 since an early-season trade brought Allen Iverson. And with a 5-8 January and two games to go, they’ll suffer their first losing month since February 2004.
At times, you go through tough times,” Pistons coach Michael Curry said. “Sometimes, we forget about the tough times when you haven’t been through them in a while. But this is just a tough stretch as we try to find ourselves as a team. The only way you get better is to keep battling and keep working, and things will eventually turn for you.”
Iverson is averaging a career-low 17.6 points since joining the Pistons, who seem to be struggling to find a role for him. He’s also playing a career-low 37.8 minutes per game.
Minnesota is 11-7 all-time at home against the Pistons, but has not won against Detroit at Target Center since January 2005, an 86-83 triumph.
