Monday NBA: Bulls (40-40) at Pistons (39-41)

The final week of the NBA regular season is upon us, with Monday’s Chicago at Detroit game have the most meaning of all the games in the Eastern Conference tonight.

That’s because Chicago can clinch no worse than No. 7 in the East with a win in Motown tonight, although the Pistons are 4-point favorites on WagerWeb.com, with an over/under of 196.5.

The Bulls actually are tied for sixth in the conference with the Sixers, but Philly owns the tiebreaker. Chicago is a game ahead of No. 8 Detroit and still could finish seventh with a loss. Obviously the benefit to finishing No. 7 opposed to No. 8 is not having to face the red-hot Cavaliers in Round 1 of the playoffs.

The Pistons have to win out (get to 41-41) to get to No. 7 and avoid LeBron James and Co. If the Bulls lose tonight but beat the Toronto Raptors on the last day of the regular season they would also be 41-41, but the Pistons, based on a better conference record, own the potential tiebreaker. Rodney Stuckey has been the best Piston against the Bulls this year, averaging 23.3 points.

Chicago has been stellar at home lately but still is iffy on the road at just 12-28 overall (and 0-5 in overtime games). The Bulls average 4.3 fewer points per game on the road and allow five more points. They have lost two straight away from the United Center and nine of 11 on the road. Chicago lost 104-98 at Detroit on Dec. 23, and has dropped five of seven at The Palace of Auburn Hills since the 2005-06 season.

“It seems like on the road sometimes we get down a little bit,” coach Vinny Del Negro said. “We start rushing things. When we get down at home, we have more toughness, grit and resiliency. On the road, we have to guard better. We can’t always rely on our offense. And that’s the next step for us.”

The Bulls lead the season series 2-1, winning the last meeting 99-91 even though star rookie Derrick Rose sat out with an injury. Chicago has won four in a row and 11 of 14. The Bulls have not been over .500 since they were 2-1 on Nov. 1 but can be with a win tonight. Detroit has lost 10 of 16 overall.
