It’s official: Heels’ Hansbrough out Tuesday vs. UK
When Kentucky and North Carolina, the two winningest programs in college basketball, history meet on Tuesday, as expected the Heels won’t have reigning National Player of the Year Tyler Hansbrough. Despite that, they are big 16-point favorites on WagerWeb.com.
Hansbrough missed UNC’s season opening win against Penn with a shin injury, and the team is being conservative with his rehab. It was the first time in his UNC career that the senior missed a game.
“We’re trying to give him a little more work,” coach Roy Williams said. “It’s more conditioning and those things as opposed to doing anything in practice.”
Williams said he wants to see how much progress in recovery Hansbrough makes in the next 3-4 days before beginning the process to determine when he can play this season. The Heels also are without arguably their best on the ball defender in Marcus Ginyard, who is out until December.
Patrick Patterson is a powerful inside presence for Kentucky. Hansbrough defended Patterson in last season’s game at Kentucky and Patterson scored 19 points and grabbed nine rebounds. Deon Thompson, a junior, will likely draw the defensive assignment on Patterson.

In Friday’s 111-103 loss to Virginia Military Institute, Patterson took only four shots, and the Cats stumbled.
UK coach Billy Gillispie said those lack of touches were an aberration and said the frenetic style of the game was “about 75 percent” responsible for Patterson’s lack of post touches. The rest of the responsibility fell on some missed opportunities to throw him the ball and Patterson’s own failure to respond to a slow start, Gillispie said.
UNC has beaten Kentucky in their last four games. Kentucky has the most wins in college basketball at 1,966 and UNC is second, trailing by 15.
