Cleveland point guard , a leading candidate for NBA Rookie of the Year along with Minnesota’s Ricky Rubio, will not play this weekend due to a concussion. The Cavs host Milwaukee on Friday and the 76ers on Saturday – Cleveland will be a NBA basketball bets underdog for both on WagerWeb.com.

Irving was evaluated at the Cleveland Clinic on Thursday, one day after he was diagnosed with a concussion shortly before the Cavs beat the Los Angeles Clippers with Irving on the bench. Irving, who was accidentally kneed in the head during Tuesday’s game in Miami, complained of a headache after warming up and missed his first game this season.

Irving, who does not have a history of concussions, was driving to the basket in the fourth quarter Tuesday when he banged into Heat forward Chris Bosh. Irving fell backward and hit his head on Dwyane Wade’s knee. He stayed in the game and made two free throws before he was taken out by coach Byron Scott with 1:27 left.

Irving had a headache overnight, but was set to play against the Clippers on Wednesday. After a pregame workout, he complained his head felt like it “was on fire.” He was administered a concussion test at Quicken Loans Arena and doctors diagnosed the concussion.

The former Duke player is averaging 18 points and 5.1 assists for the Cavs, who are a surprising 10-14 in Scott’s second season. Irving was chosen to participate in the “Rising Stars” game during All-Star weekend this month in Orlando. Irving must be symptom-free to resume practicing and will need to be cleared through a new return-to-play protocol established by the NBA in December.

Ramon Sessions will start in Irving’s place. He scored 24 points with 13 assists in Cleveland’s 99-92 win over the Clips.

As for Friday’s game, the Bucks have been streaky as of late, following a three-game winning streak with a three-game losing skid. They returned to the win column Wednesday with a 105-99 victory over Toronto. Brandon Jennings leads the team in points (18.9) and assists (5.3). Carlos Delfino is coming off a season-high 25 points. Milwaukee has won three straight against the Cavaliers, all coming last season.
