White Sox may have to bump Peavy back
The Chicago White Sox are in the midst of a season-defining 11-game road trip against the Red Sox, Yankees, Twins and a make-up game with the Cubs. If Chicago doesn’t finish around .500 on this trip, its chances in the AL Central are remote.
And the trip hasn’t started very well, with two losses in Boston as the Central-leading Tigers have taken two out in Los Angeles. The White Sox are back at .500 for the first time since July 29 and now tied with Minnesota for second in the division, 4.5 games behind Detroit.
The back end of the pitching staff has been a big issue for Chicago, and the White Sox officially demoted Jose Contreras to the bullpen after he was lit up a few nights ago by the Red Sox. But that move might have to be rescinded with the news that potential savior Jake Peavy might not be ready to return from injury on Saturday as originally hoped.
Peavy’s ankle, which is what landed on the DL, seems fine, but he was hit in the pitching elbow on Monday night in a minor-league rehab start. So if that problem doesn’t allow him to throw a side bullpen session on Wednesday or Thursday, then he would pitch at Yankee Stadium this weekend – bet on the White Sox-Yankees series at WagerWeb.com.

“I want to pitch at this level,” said Peavy, who rejoined the White Sox in Boston and was wearing an elastic sleeve over his elbow. “If and when I’m ready, we’ll decide that as a team.”
Peavy looked good on Monday otherwise in Triple-A, finishing with five scoreless innings in an 80-pitch effort. He said the right ankle injury that hasn’t allowed him to pitch in a major league game since June 8 is no longer a problem.
“I certainly feel like I was getting close before the incident happened,” Peavy said.
If Peavy can’t start, Carlos Torres or Daniel Hudson could be promoted from Triple-A to start Saturday.
