White Sox won’t get Quentin back any time soon

The Chicago White Sox simply can’t hit this year, and that’s a main reason they enter Thursday just 1.5 games out of last place in the AL Central.

Expect that slide downward to continue with the news that 2008 AL MVP candidate is out until the All-Star break. Quentin was eligible to be activated from the 15-day disabled list Wednesday but hasn’t played since May 25, when he said he tore a tendon in his left foot while running out a double against the Angels.

Quentin said his foot is feeling better, but he wasn’t able to even run until Tuesday.

White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen suggested that if the Sox get knocked out of contention early (very possible), Quentin might be better served sitting out the remainder of the season.

“If Carlos is back before the All-Star break, it’s a blessing,” Guillen said. “We’ll be lucky. It’s going to be tough for him to be back at that particular time.”

White Sox general manager Ken Williams didn’t agree with Guillen (as he rarely does).
“I don’t know where Ozzie gets his timetable from,” Williams said. “Because we don’t have a timetable for him.”

It’s been hard for Quentin to stay healthy in his two seasons in Chicago. Last year he was arguably the leading AL MVP candidate with 36 homers until he missed the final 28 games (and playoffs) because of a broken right wrist.

“You know, patience is a virtue and something I’ve never been good at,” Quentin said. “It’s something right now I’m forced to [practice]. I’m going to focus more on the improvements I’ve made, and I’m very optimistic about those.”

Look for the White Sox to be big-time sellers at the trade deadline or even before, as Williams is apt to make a deal at any time. He will want to continue to make this team younger since contending doesn’t appear in the cards this season.
