Torn testicle = worst baseball injury of season!

I can almost guarantee you that third baseman will wear a cup while playing from now on. Beltre might miss the rest of the season after taking a hard one-hopper to his groin off the bat of a White Sox player Wednesday night.

Manager Don Wakamatsu said the Gold Glove third baseman is out indefinitely, and might need surgery because of internal bleeding and tearing in a testicle. Beltre does not wear a protective cup because he says it’s uncomfortable.

I’m guessing he’s much more uncomfortable right now.

If Beltre needs surgery, he could be out for an extended time. If there’s no surgery, he would need 10 days to two weeks to recover. If surgery is required, it would have to occur within 72 hours of the injury and could leave the third baseman sidelined for at least a month.

Amazingly, Beltre stayed in the game after the ninth-inning injury and scored the winning run in the Mariners’ 1-0 victory 14 innings.

“It hurt pretty bad,” Beltre said. “It was hurting me pretty much the whole game after that.”

So was Beltre brave for continuing to play? “I don’t know about brave. Maybe stupid.”

Shortstop Josh Wilson was recalled to take Beltre’s roster spot, with Jack Hannahan likely getting the start at third. Beltre recently came off the DL following shoulder surgery and was playing well, batting .390 (16-for-41) since his return and on an eight-game hitting streak.  He is a free agent at the end of the season and not likely to return to Seattle.

The Mariners also lost starting shortstop Jack Wilson in that game. He aggravated an old injury, Wakamatsu said, a Grade 1 tear of the hamstring where it attaches to the top of his left leg. He’s day-to-day.
