Rangers lose Young for two weeks
Big, big blow to the Texas Rangers as they attempt to catch the Boston Red Sox for the AL wild-card lead: starting Michael Young is out for two weeks, maybe even more.
The official diagnosis is a left hamstring strain after an MRI earlier today. Young will have an injection of blood platelets that is designed to help accelerate the healing process, GM Jon Daniels said.
Young got hurt running out a grounder Tuesday, pulling up after crossing the first base for the final out of the third inning of the Rangers’ 5-2 win over Toronto. Young, the longest-tenured Rangers player, is in his ninth full season and has never reached the playoffs. Heading into Wednesday’s games, Young was sixth in the American League with a .322 batting average. He also had 22 home runs, 35 doubles and 67 RBIs and is 32 hits shy of a sixth 200-hit season in a span of seven years.
“I’ve never had a hamstring issue before in my life, so it’s a little bit of a shock,” Young said. “At this point of the season, missing one pitch kills me. It’s pretty tough, but I’m not going to pout about it. It happens. I’m going to try and get back as quickly as possible.”

Rangers manager Ron Washington, who first described it as a “pulled” muscle, admitted it was not a good situation.
The Rangers have 30 games remaining. A two-week window would end just in time for the Rangers’ first of two remaining series against the Angels, and he would miss 13 games.
Omar Vizquel filled in for Young on Tuesday. He has only started there twice and never played there before in his career before signing with the Rangers. Esteban German and Chris Davis, who played some third in Triple-A this season, also could be used. Chris has hit safely in seven of eight games since being recalled from Triple-A Oklahoma City.
