Thursday MLB: Seattle Mariners (39-38) at N.Y. Yankees (45-32)
The New York Yankees have won seven games in a row and 10 straight against the Mariners in the Bronx, and it’s rather unlikely those streaks come to an end tonight.
That’s because the Yanks are starting ace CC Sabathia, and New York has opened as a big -300 favorite on WagerWeb.com. Sabathia (7-4, 3.55 ERA) is 6-1 with a 2.83 ERA in his past 10 starts, holding opponents to a .195 average. He is facing Seattle for the first time since May 21, 2007, and is 4-1 with a 1.71 ERA in his last six against the M’s.
Meanwhile, Alex Rodriguez has come alive for New York, as he homered in Wednesday’s 4-2 win for his second homer in two nights and fourth in six games. In his past seven games, Rodriguez is 10-for-23 (.435) with four home runs and 13 RBIs. This comes after a three-week skid in which he hit just .176 with two homers and nine RBIs, prompting Joe Girardi to give his star third baseman two days off.
“I’m feeling better. I feel more energized out there,” Rodriguez said. “Even when I struggled, I never had an at-bat where I didn’t feel like I was going to get the job done.”
As for Seattle, Ichiro went 0-for-4 on Wednesday and had his 12-game hitting streak snapped. But he is batting .395 (15 for 38) against Sabathia.

The Mariners, who had won nine of 12 entering this series, start lefty Jason Vargas (3-3, 3.79 ERA) tonight. This will be his first start ever against the Yankees. He has an 11.57 ERA in his last two road starts.
The Mariners are 5-21 in their last 26 games as a road underdog of +201 or greater, and they are +250 on WagerWeb.com.
In other Yankee news, outfielder Xavier Nady will undergo Tommy John elbow reconstruction surgery next Wednesday, ending his season. Originally injuring the elbow in a game on April 14, Nady attempted to rehab his arm for more than two months in an effort to return this season.
