John Smoltz’s first start with Boston didn’t exactly go as planned, but the 42-year-old is back on the mound tonight to prove he still has something left in the tank.

And the Red Sox have opened as -125 money line favorites on WagerWeb.com tonight in Baltimore.

Smoltz was roughed up by the Nationals in his first start since June 2, 2008, and first ever with a team other than Atlanta. The Nats got him for four runs in the first inning alone as Boston lost 9-3.

“A lot of hard work went into this,” Smoltz said after that outing. “Although I’d like that mulligan in the first inning, that’s just the way it happens. Now everything will be normal for me.”

Smoltz did get better as the game went on, including striking out the side in the fifth as he finished with five runs and seven hits allowed.

Smoltz is 1-1 with a 5.40 ERA in three career starts against the Orioles. This is his third appearance and first career start at Camden Yards.

Boston shortstop Jed Lowrie had a setback on Sunday at Triple-A. He has been on the disabled list since April 12 with a left wrist injury and departed his rehab game with Pawtucket on Sunday after two at-bats due to a sore left quad.

Baltimore starts former Cub Rich Hill (3-2, 6.03) tonight. He hasn’t completed five innings in four of his last six starts. Hill has yet to win a start at home.

The Orioles are 10-17 this season against the AL East and 0-5 against the Red Sox. The Birds have been outscored 34-14 and are batting .213 while losing those five games to Boston.

But six Orioles currently have hitting streaks of three or more games, including Ty Wigginton, who is in the midst of an eight-game hitting streak. During that stretch, Wigginton is hitting .467 with two home runs.
