Phils turn to Pedro over Hamels for Game 2
The Philadelphia Phillies are bumping reigning World Series MVP Cole Hamels back to Game 3 of the World Series and will star long-time Yankee nemesis Pedro Martinez in Game 2 on Thursday night – bet on the series at WagerWeb.com.
Martinez, who turned 38 on Sunday, pitched seven scoreless innings in Game 2 of the National League Championship Series, giving up only two hits to the Los Angeles Dodgers. He is 11-11 with a 3.20 ERA against the Yankees in 32 career starts but is 1-2 with a 4.72 ERA against them in six postseason appearances – all of those coming when Martinez was with the Red Sox. Pedro was 5-1 with a 3.63 in nine regular season games with the Phillies this season.
“Pedro has been in the big environment,” Manager Charlie Manuel said. “He’s pitched about everywhere you can pitch. I don’t think nothing is going to really bother him or get him upset. I think we can pitch him in either ballpark, really. I don’t think it matters at all.”
Hamels, who had a 3.76 ERA at home and a 4.99 ERA on the road in the regular season, will face Yankees lefty Andy Pettitte. Hamels is 1-1 with a 6.75 ERA in three postseason starts, after he went 4-0 with a 1.80 ERA in five postseason starts last year. He has allowed nine hits and three home runs in 15 postseason at-bats against left-handed hitters, not a good omen at Yankee Stadium and its short right field fence. Hamels also hasn’t lasted longer than 5 1/3 innings in any of his three postseason starts, and has allowed at least three runs in all three of them.
Meanwhile, Wednesday night’s Game 1, which will feature former Indians teammates Cliff Lee and CC Sabathia as the starting pitchers, could be played in some lousy conditions. There’s a 30 percent chance of showers in the Bronx, with game-time temperature is expected to be about 47 degrees.
The forecast for Thursday night calls for mostly clear skies and a low of 48.
If no games are rained out, look for both Sabathia and Lee to pitch Games 1, 4 and 7 – the latter two on three days’ rest (if it goes that far, obviously). Sabathia is used to pitching on short rest, but Lee never has.
