Before the season, many people expected a Yankees-Angels American League Championship Series, and that well could still happen although the Yanks are tied with Boston in the AL East and the Angels are second in the AL West.

The Angels have opened as -125 money line series favorites for this three-game set on WagerWeb.com.

New York comes in off a sweep in Minnesota, which completed a season sweep of the Twins for the since 2003. The big news was that Mark Teixeira homered for the first time since June 12, a drought of 96 at-bats. Teixeira had never gone more than 94 at-bats between homers, a stretch he endured from May 30-June 23, 2006 while playing for the Rangers. Teixeira hit .253 during this latest streak.

“Once you get a little lift and a little backspin, the home runs start coming,” he said. “I’m not the kind of guy that sits on the computer and looks at every one of my stats all day long.”

Look for Teixeira, whom the Angels acquired last year for a playoff push, to hear plenty of boos tonight after choosing not to re-sign there.

New York’s Johnny Damon sat out Thursday’s game just for rest but will play tonight. Alex Rodriguez was the DH Thursday, but he’ll start all three games this weekend at third base.

The Yanks have won eight road games in a row. The franchise hasn’t won nine in a row away from home since 1998. The Yankees, though, have struggled on the road against the Angels in recent years, losing 16 of their last 22 games.

As for L.A., it enters having lost two of three to Texas and fall out of the AL West lead. The Angels also dropped two of three earlier this season in New York.

The starting pitchers tonight are Joba Chamberlain (4-2, 4.04) for New York and lefty Joe Saunders (8-5, 4.44) for L.A., which is a +110 WagerWeb.com underdog tonight.

The Yankees are 7-0 in their last 7 road games vs. a left-handed starter.

Chamberlain was bombed by the Jays last time out. But on the road he is 4-0 with a 2.74 ERA in seven starts. Saunders is 1-1 with a 7.59 ERA in his last four outings, surrendering nine home runs during that span.

The Angels are 4-0 in Saunders’ past four home starts.
