Wednesday MLB: L.A. Dodgers (62-38) at St. Louis Cardinals (55-48)
Thanks to their second win in a row over the Dodgers, the St. Louis Cardinals are back in first place in the NL Central.
L.A. had been the only team in the majors not to lose three in a row this season until Tuesday night’s rain-delayed game when the Cardinals broke a scoreless tie with six runs in the sixth inning off Chad Billingsley, who had held them to one hit for five innings.
By going to their 100th game of the season, the Dodgers set a modern franchise record for longest period of time before losing three straight. The major league record was by the Seattle Mariners, who went until Sept. 20-22 in 2001 (games 147-149) before losing three consecutive.
Can L.A. avoid a four-game streak tonight? Well, the Cards have opened as -113 money line favorites on WagerWeb.com.

Since the start of the 2004 season, the Dodgers have won just three of 19 games in St. Louis. In that stretch, the Dodgers have been outscored by an average of 5.9 runs a game to 2.6 and outhomered 24-10. That’s a trend!
Los Angeles is 2 for 16 with runners in scoring position in this series, scoring one run on 20 hits in the last two games.
New Cardinals shortstop Julio Lugo is red hot since being traded from Boston. He has nine hits in four games but did get Tuesday night off. New outfielder Matt Holliday went 1 for 3 Tuesday and is 9 for 17 (.529) with five doubles and four runs scored in five games since joining St. Louis.
The Cards start Joel Pineiro (9-9, 2.65) tonight as they attempt to clinch the series. He has won three straight starts and has allowed three earned runs or less in nine consecutive starts while posting a 1.24 ERA in his last four outings.
The Dodgers counter with Clayton Kershaw (8-5, 2.96). He has four quality starts in a row and he hasn’t lost since June 10. He is 1-0 with a 2.08 ERA career against St. Louis.
