Monday MLB: Toronto Blue Jays (53-57) at N.Y. Yankees (69-42)
Is the AL East race all but over? That certainly looks possible in the wake of that historic four-game sweep by New York against the Red Sox over the weekend.
The Yanks now lead the division by 6.5 games, and even Alex Rodriguez is hitting in the clutch. He broke a scoreless tie with a seventh-inning home run and the Yankees went on to a 5-2 Sunday night victory.
Thus A-Rod became the first player in major league history to snap scoreless ties by hitting home runs in the seventh inning or later twice in one series; he did it in the 15th inning on Friday night.
New York has now won seven games in a row, and two of those were a sweep in Toronto last week. Thus the Yanks are solid -142 favorites for tonight’s opener on WagerWeb.com. The Yankees are 7-2 against the Blue Jays this season, including 3-1 at Yankee Stadium.

Sergio Mitre (1-0, 7.50 ERA) starts for the Bombers tonight. The Yankees have won three of Mitre’s four starts since he was called up from Triple-A despite him yielding 16 runs over 18 innings. Mitre got a no-decision last week in Toronto, allowing three runs and eight hits in 4 1/3 innings.
The Jays counter with Marc Rzepczynski (1-3, 3.74), who clearly needs to buy a vowel! He took the loss last Wednesday, going six-plus innings, allowing four runs on five hits, both of which tied season highs. He did strike out seven.
New York’s Hideki Matsui is 9 for 21 with four home runs and 10 RBIs against the Blue Jays this season, while Johnny Damon has hit three homers, three doubles and one triple in 34 at-bats.
The Blue Jays own a 22-31 record on the road this season and have won just four of their past 12 games away from home.
