Three little words about poker: study, practice, know

I culled casino websites and advice from the pros for helpful advice about playing online. Three little words are most important: study, practice, know.

Study the game you figure on playing. Read everything you can from guides and books to tips and strategies. Better yet, consult a good poker player, maybe a relative or a friend. The more you absorb, the better you will do.

The old joke — How do you get to Carnegie Hall? — holds true in poker: Practice, practice, practice. This means playing as often as you can. Play with your family or friends. Play for free on the numerous websites. Practice strategies. Just like in the many facets of life, practices gets you closer to perfect while you learn.

Know you game, whether it’s draw, stud or Texas Hold’em. If you don’t know it thoroughly, you’ll be at a disadvantage. Cut down on your mistakes. Develop a winning strategy. Manage your money.

Remember that online poker is different from the so-called brick-and-mortar version. For example, the games online are played more rapidly than those in casinos, perhaps twice as fast. In fact, some online players manage multiple tables.

Then there’s the imbiber. When I was last in Las Vegas, the free drinks flowed. But I sipped because I was trying to win money. But when home sweet home, the drinks may flow more freely for the online player when he or she decides to try a few hands after an evening of partying. The end game: a loser’s undoubtedly.

If used to playing at casinos, you may never warm to online poker. I’ve read that even casino pros that test their skills online don’t do well.

I’ve found that the best way to end a losing streak in any form of gambling is also three little words: take a break. Consult an expert. Check out different strategies. Review your money management.

Never forget poker involves an element of luck so don’t play any game where you can lose more money than you can afford.

Here’s some advice from several professional players that know poker starting with Mathew Hilger, author and columnist for several websites:

“Many poker plaayers get themselves in trouble by bluffing too often. This is even truer on the Internet than in live games. Bluffing a lot is just not a profitable endeavor on the Internet, especially in the low-limit games where you frequently have hands go to shutdowns.”

Bill Burton, author, writer for national gaming publications and online columnist, points out:

“The biggest mistake that many losing Texas Hold’em players make is to play any two suited cards from any position. The second biggest mistake is playing a Single Ace from any Position. I keep notes on players that I play against and I use the acronym SAP for this type of player and that is actually what many of them end up being when they play a single ace with no kicker.”

J. Phillip Vogel, leading online gambling authority that has written for major publications, advises:

“Although the game of choice right now is Texas Hold’em, you might want to try and find a site that has pushed past that singular craze to offer a selection of other not-so-trnedy poker classics such as Five Card Student, Seven Card Stud, Omaha, Triple Draw and Five Card Draw.”
