Saratoga Sinner Injured
Saratoga Sinner didn’t get to enjoy his spot as a Kentucky Derby hopeful very long after winning the Holy Bull Stakes on Jan 31st. It was discovered that he suffered a bone chip in his left knee that likely will sideline him until the summer, trainer Eddie Kenneally said Tuesday.
“It’s unfortunate, but these horses are really fragile,” Kenneally said. “He’s always been sound, but he came out of the race with a little bit of a bone chip in his knee, so we’ll go ahead and do surgery and hopefully have him ready for the 3-year-old races in the summer and fall. It’s bad timing, because he’s showing now that he’s a quality horse and is getting better. He’s improved dramatically in his last three races, and he hasn’t even peaked yet, so there’s a lot to look forward to.”
“He has a lot of things that you look for as a three-year-old at this time of year. I think he could have continued on and improved enough to be a force in the Florida Derby” Kenneally said. “Certainly, he showed a lot of what you want to see in a young horse at this time of year”.
Saratoga Sinner is the son of Harlan’s Holiday and has a 2-0-1 record in four starts. He earned a career-best 96 Beyer Speed Figure for his victory in the nine-furlong Holy Bull, but none of that will matter until the summer meets. If he has a full recovery he could be a factor in the Breeders’ Cup, if he’s able to qualify. Saratoga Sinner was bred by Brereton Jones and is owned by Lally Stable. He was purchased at the 2007 Keeneland September yearling sale for $130,000 and had already earned back $116,495.
