One Caroline Favored in the Rampart
Undefeated filly One Caroline will take her perfect 4-0-0 record into the $150,000 Rampart Stakes March 29 at Gulfstream Park. It will be her first go at a mile and an eighth for the $400,000 yearling of Unbridled’s Song. She’s in against a weaker field, other than one other stakes winner; Darley Stable’s Sea Chanter, who won the Miesque Stakes (gr. III) in 2007.
One Caroline is coming off a strong win in the one-mile Sabin Stakes (gr. III) Feb. 22 at Gulfstream, where she went wire-to-wire to win by a length in her stakes debut. Her previous race a month earlier than that was a dominant seven-length victory over the same distance in an allowance event. She worked four furlongs in :48 flat at Palm Meadows on March 22 and will have Edgar Prado aboard.
If there’s one horse in the field that has a chance to run down One Caroline it’s Stronach Stables’ Ginger Brew. She only has one start on dirt, where she was only beaten by a head over one mile. She’ll break from the rail with Javier Castellano aboard.
The entire field, and their mounts, shapes up like this:
1. Ginger Brew – 120 – Javier Castellano
2. So Glitzy – 114 – Elvis Trujillo
3. One Caroline – 120 – Edgar Prado
4. Hamsa – 114 – Jose Lezcano
5. Sea Chanter – 120 – Christopher DeCarlo
6. Striking Tomisue – 120 – Jermaine Bridgmohan
7. African Violet – 120 – Julien Leparoux
