Imports Get Ready for Breeders’ Cup
Some of the world’s best horses are heading to Santa Anita for the $5 million Breeders’ Cup in October. Japan’s Casino Drive is set to arrive in California on October 1 to start preparations for the race. The 5 ¾ length winner of the Peter Pan Stakes was stopped in his attempt at the Belmont Stakes when he suffered a bruise on his foot a couple of days before the race. He is undefeated in his two starts and many are waiting to see how he will run against Big Brown.
French horse Sprit One won the Arlington Million and has four other wins in 18 starts. The four-year-old will use Santa Anita’s Goodwood Stakes on Sept. 27 as a trial for his intended run in the Classic. The Goodwood will be his first start on any surface other than turf, and first race since Aug 9.
European Duke of Marmalade is a five-time Group 1 winner. He will either get prepped in the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe on Oct. 5, or on the new Poly track at Great Leighs, 30 miles northeast of London. Duke of Marmalade is 6-4-1 in 14 starts and has not run on a synthetic surface as of yet.
Other horses expected to make the trip to the Classic, or another Breeders’ Cup race, are Henrythenavigator and New Approach. Henrythenavigator is a four-time group 1 winner and will run in the one-mile Queen Elizabeth II Stakes at Ascot as his prep for the Classic or maybe the Mile. New Approach is the Irish Champion and will use the Arc as a prep for either the Breeders’ Cup Classic or the Oct. 20 Champion Stakes.
