2009 Breeders’ Cup post positions
Saturday is truly the big day for Breeders’ Cup action, held again this year at Santa Anita. All eyes will be on the Classic and Zenyatta, the unbeaten mare.
The 13-0 Zenyatta was entered in Saturday’s $5 million Classic instead of the Ladies’ Classic she won last year, giving a boost to the big race’s profile and throwing a bit of a scare into some of the boys. It will be her first race against male horses and the longest race of her career at 1 1/4 miles. It’s a deep field in the Classic that includes Kentucky Derby winner and Preakness runner-up Mine That Bird, Belmont Stakes winner Summer Bird and European superstar Rip Van Winkle.
“We have to be next to Zenyatta in the gate, so hopefully she don’t intimidate us too much, as big as she is,” joked Tim Ice, trainer of Summer Bird, who drew the No. 3 post just inside the 5-2 morning line favorite.
Zenyatta was drawn in post position No. 4 and installed as the 5-2 favorite. On her inside will be Mine That Bird, in the No. 1 hole.
Trainer John Shirreffs said Zenyatta deserved the opportunity to prove her greatness.
“That’s the way we felt about it,” he said. “She’s on the brink of making history. Why take that away at the last minute?”
Horse racing’s other, more famous female, Rachel Alexandra, is not racing here. Her principal owner, Jess Jackson, does not like synthetic tracks like the one at Santa Anita.
This is the third year the Breeders’ Cup has been held over two days. This marks the fifth time Santa Anita has played host to the Breeders’ Cup. It also is the first time the Breeders’ Cup has been held at the same site in consecutive years.
