No one is hotter than the Cardinal, who have put up 106 points in the past two weeks in destroying Oregon and Southern Cal – Stanford’s 55 points was the most the Trojans have ever allowed. Despite those impressive wins, the Cardinal don’t hold their Rose Bowl fate in their own hands and must win out and get some help.

Stanford is 5-0 at home this year and has won 10 of its past 11 there. Toby Gerhart has rushed for 100 yards or more in 11 straight home games, dating back to 2007. Gerhart has been a beast in the past two games (401 yards rushing), but freshman QB Andrew Luck can’t be overlooked as he leads the conference in passing efficiency. Stanford has overtaken Arizona as the Pac-10’s top offensive team, averaging 445.6 yards of total offense per contest.

The Bears won’t have one-time Heisman candidate Jahvid Best for the second week in a row. But backup Shane Vereen is no slouch, as he ran for a career-high 159 yards last week in the win over Arizona, including a late 61-yard TD that iced it.

Cal is 3-0 when playing as an unranked team in 2009, while 4-3 mark when ranked. In the team’s seven wins Cal is averaging 41.0 points per outing, while the club is scoring only 6.7 points per contest in its three losses. In Cal’s victories, QB Kevin Riley has completed 62.9 percent of his passes with 14 touchdown passes and three interceptions. In Cal’s losses, he completed 43.8 percent of his passes for one touchdown and two interceptions.

The Bears have has won six of the last seven meetings, including last season when Cal scored 28 consecutive points to break it open. This is the first time Cal is a dog in this game since 2001.

The Rebels are 4-point betting favorites on WagerWeb.com.

LSU had a close call with Louisiana Tech last week, but three starters who missed that one will play this week – with the most important being QB Jordan Jefferson, who will start, “unless there’s a setback, ” Coach Les Miles said. The same is true for senior tight end Richard Dickson and sophomore center T-Bob Hebert, who both also sat out last week.

Jefferson has been nursing an ankle sprain suffered in the loss to Alabama a few weeks ago, but Miles said the sophomore can be effective even if his mobility is limited. Backup QB Jarrett Lee was only 7-for-22 for barely more than 100 yards last week as LSU trailed 13-10 to Louisiana Tech in the third quarter before rallying.

Meanwhile, the Tiger defense has gone six straight games without allowing a first quarter touchdown. The Tigers are allowing just 13.7 points and 311.8 total yards. They spent the week of practice focusing on Ole Miss RB/WR Dexter McCluster. He ran for 33 of the Rebels’ 102 rushing yards and caught three passes for 37 yards in their 31-13 victory in Baton Rouge last season. That game snapped the Tigers’ school-record streak of game scoring at least 21 points at 31 straight contests. McCluster comes into Saturday’s game after rushing for 282 yards in the Rebels’ win against Tennessee last Saturday.

LSU has allowed just three rushing TDs all year – tied with Georgia for fewest in the SEC. But the Tigers have allowed a total of 354 rushing yards in the past two games. McCluster has rushed for 591 yards and five touchdowns in his past three games.

Ole Miss has won four of five but has lost six of seven in this series and four in a row in Oxford.

OSU coach Jim Tressel says the rivalry has lost none of its eminence.

“This rivalry has been going on for 105 games. So, no, I don’t think it’s lost any of its luster,” Tressel said. “We feel this is the greatest rivalry in all of sports. Our kids are anxious to compete with the Wolverines and go up to the Big House. It’s an exciting week and something we’re fortunate to be a part of.”

The Wolverines are 5-6 and have lost four consecutive games overall and six in a row in conference play. Michigan must defeat Ohio State in the regular-season finale to become bowl eligible. And it sure would take some pressure of beleaguered coach Rich Rodriguez.

Ohio State clinched at least a share of its fifth consecutive conference title with its overtime victory last week against Iowa. The Buckeyes can win the outright title by beating the Wolverines.

In their last four losses, Michigan has been outscored 99-19 in the second half, mostly thanks to a suspect defense. And that defense isn’t much better this year, having allowed 156 points in its past four games.

The Wolverines do lead the Big Ten in scoring but have topped 30 points just twice in the past seven games. True freshman QB Tate Forcier has started every game this season, and needs just 176 passing yards to give him 2,000 on the season. Starting RB Brandon Minor is doubtful for the game with a shoulder injury. Minor leads the team in rushing (503 yards) and TDs (eight). Against Purdue this season, Minor gained 154 yards on 19 carries and scored three touchdowns.

OSU’s defense has only allowed 10 touchdowns in the last 39 quarters and it ranks sixth in the country with 23 takeaways. Ohio State will look a little different Saturday, as they will be wearing retro uniforms to honor the 1954 team.

Los Angeles police say 36-year-old Alexandra Kerry was stopped by officers on a Hollywood street at about 12:40 a.m. Thursday and failed a sobriety test.

Officer Bruce Borihanh says she was booked at the Hollywood police station and was held for about five hours. She was released at about 5:30 a.m. after posting $5,000 bail.

Borihanh didn’t immediately have other details.

Alexandra Kerry is the eldest daughter of the Massachusetts senator, the Democrats’ 2004 presidential nominee.

She has produced documentaries and has had several small acting roles.

Requests for comment from Alexandra Kerry’s agent and John Kerry’s office were not immediately returned.

The Spanish research involving more than 15,500 men and 26,000 women found large quantities of alcohol could be even more beneficial for men.

Female drinkers did not benefit to the same extent, the study in Heart found.

Experts are critical, warning heavy drinking can increase the risk of other diseases, with alcohol responsible for 1.8 million deaths globally per year.

The study was conducted in Spain, a country with relatively high rates of alcohol consumption and low rates of coronary heart disease.

The research involved men and women aged between 29 and 69, who were asked to document their lifetime drinking habits and followed for 10 years.

Crucially the research team claim to have eliminated the “sick abstainers” risk by differentiating between those who had never drunk and those whom ill-health had forced to quit. This has been used in the past to explain fewer heart-related deaths among drinkers on the basis that those who are unhealthy to start with are less likely to drink.

According to the researchers from Simon Fraser University the test subjects remain paralyzed even when the light is turned off. However, when exposed to ordinary or natural light the paralysis wears off and the animals regain consciousness.

Neil Branda who headed the study along with his colleagues detail in the Journal of the American Chemical Society that similar “photoswitches” — light-sensitive materials that undergo photoreactions — have been available for years. Researchers use them in their studies and even doctors use light-sensitive materials and photoreactions in medicine in photodynamic therapy to treat certain forms of cancer.

However, what makes this study novel is that typically those light-sensitive materials, however, do not have the reversibility that exists in photoswitching.

The JACS report describes development and successful testing of a photoswitch composed of the light-sensitive material, dithienylethene. The scientists grew transparent, pinhead-sized worms and fed them a dithienylethene. When exposed to ultraviolet light, the worms turned blue and became paralyzed. When exposed to visible light, the dithienylethene became colorless again and the worms’ paralysis ended.

Scientists are not completely sure how the switch causes paralysis. However, the study demonstrates that photoswitches may have the ability to yield future successes in turning photodynamic therapy on and off, and for other applications in medicine and research.
