Check out the Disaster Movie trailer… it’s a disaster
On August 29, Disaster Movie will be released, placed in the end of August spot where bad movies usually go to die at the end of the summer. Disaster Movie will not be screened for critics before it is released, which is usually a sign that it won’t be very good. Disaster Movie follows Friedberg and Seltzer’s previous spoof films, Date Movie, Epic Movie and Meet the Spartans, neither of which were well regarded.
This time, Disaster Movie spoofs all the disaster movies about something disastrous striking the world. However, the ads and trailers for Disaster Movie suggest many non-disaster movies will be spoofed. Enchanted, Juno, Sex and the City, Indiana Jones, Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk, Hancock, Wanted, Kung Fu Panda, 10,000 B.C and even Hannah Montana have been seen as spoof targets in the Disaster Movie promos.
In this regard, Disaster Movie is not so much a spoof of disaster movies as it is a spoof of movies that were made in between this January, when Friedberg and Seltzer released Meet the Spartans, and now. Friedberg and Seltzer obviously were able to work quickly to film spoofs of all these current movies, or they just watched trailers to get their ideas. That is probably the case.
Despite fans low regard for Friedberg and Seltzer’s comedies and the declining quality of movie spoof films in general, their movies usually open well at the box office. Date Movie, Epic Movie and Meet the Spartans opened at number 1 or close to it at the box office on their opening weekend.
